Organ transplantation,
stem cell therapy, tissue and scaffold implants have all provided promise for
the treatment of many chronic, degenerative and congenital diseases. Musculoskeletal tissue banking and cell
therapy is considered to be at the forefront of tissue engineering.
Here, we will describe the
history of development of tissue engineering since the 19th century
and provide scientific and commercial information on the recent development of
tissue engineering in the field of orthopaedic
surgery. In particular, we will report a
series of developments in, tissue, scaffold and cell therapy for the
application in bone, cartilage and tendon replacement.
